The tranquility of Siliguri in West Bengal was disrupted when a sudden train collision occurred in the region’s Rangapani area. The Kanchanjunga Express, which was commuting towards Sealdah station in Kolkata, was hit from behind by a goods train soon after its departure from New Jalpaiguri Station.
Miraculously, there have been no reported fatalities from the accident so far. However, the incident has left both passengers and authorities in a state of shock.
West Bengal’s Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, expressed her concern over the unfortunate incident.
The news of the Kanchanjunga Express’s collision with a goods train left her shocked. In response to the incident, Banerjee assured that immediate action was being taken.

Distressed by the news, she tweeted, “Shocked to learn about a tragic train accident in Phansidewa area of Darjeeling district. The Kanchenjunga Express has reportedly been hit by a goods train. DM, SP, doctors, ambulances and disaster teams have been rushed to the site for rescue, recovery, and medical assistance. Action on war-footing initiated.”

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) confirmed the accident and promptly responded by dispatching an emergency medical team to the scene. Despite the heavy rain, rescue operations are underway to ensure the safety and well-being of the passengers.
In the wake of the accident, a help desk has been established at Sealdah station to provide necessary information and support connected to the incident.
Train accidents are unfortunately not new for this route. Comparatively, previous incidents have led to severe casualties and damages. However, quick action and immediate rescue measures during this incident have so far prevented any loss of life.
This unfortunate event once again underscores the need for stringent safety measures and regular maintenance checks in the railway sector to ensure the safe travel of passengers. The incident will likely rekindle discussions about rail safety and the importance of preventive measures to avoid such mishaps in the future.
